Our practices are now officially Breastfeeding Friendly!
All SSP Health’s GP practices in Wigan and Leigh have made a commitment to say breast is best and support breastfeeding mums.
All 14 of SSP Health’s practices in the borough, and their five branch sites, are committed to giving breastfeeding mothers a safe, supportive and welcoming place to feed their babies, either in public or private.
The practices have been given official accreditation for this by charity Breastfeeding Together ahead of Breastfeeding Week, which takes place on the first seven days of August from Thursday (August 1).
SSP Health fully recognises the huge benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies, and the benefits this also brings to the National Health Service in cost-savings due to the boost in health for all involved.
Breastfeeding Together is a charity which has been chosen by Wigan Council to give support and advice to breastfeeding and prospective mums.
The service includes 50 volunteers who help new mums with any problems they may have.
Beastfeeding Together advisor Vikki Davies gave SSP Health Practice Managers an overview of what the charity does and how surgeries can help to support mums who want to feed their babies naturally.
She said it was important that organisations, including GP practices, signposted where it was perfectly acceptable to breastfeed in public, so that it helped to normalise it in society.
SSP Health Director and GP, Dr Shikha Pitalia, said: “We were only too happy to sign up to this excellent scheme.
“Breastfeeding is one of the most health-giving actions you can do for your baby in the first months of its life. It is also estimated that the NHS could save £40bn if every new mum breastfed their baby for the first six months of life due to reduced health complaints, including fewer immunity problems.
“All our practices across the North West welcome breastfeeding mums, but our practices in Wigan and Leigh have gone the extra mile to welcome them.
“We are hoping to work with Breastfeeding Together in the future to support breastfeeding across our communities.”
