Claire House Practice Manager Janet Ingham had more reasons than just raising money for charity when she chose to run her first ever 5K Race For Life.
Janet had decided that a lifestyle change was needed to improve her health following a double hip replacement – and she also wanted to support cancer research after she lost her ‘mam’ Betty and best friend and cousin, Mary, to the disease.
Janet completed the evening run in the grounds of Haigh Hall, in Wigan, with her friends and hundreds of other runners, raising cash for Cancer Research UK along the way.
After the run, Janet said: “Last Christmas, me and my friend decided enough was enough we had to lose weight and get fit.
“I have quite a few illnesses, such as arthritis, I have had both left and right hips replaced, various operations and I also have diabetes, so I really needed to do something.
“We have followed a healthy eating plan and started walking, or yomping, every day, which lead us to doing a walk for charity.
“We have lost six stone between us and raised over £600 for Cancer Research UK.”
Janet, who is the Practice Manager at Claire House and Rivington Way, in Wigan, having previously managed Lowton and Platt Bridge surgeries, said: “Healthy living is important to our patients and me doing the run also shows people who suffer with arthritis that it can be done.
“I feel absolutely brilliant now – it has done me a world of good!”
Janet, pictured left with her friends after the event, completed the run on what would have been Mary’s birthday. She died at the age of only 31 of cervical cancer.
Janet, who has worked for SSP Health for more than 15 years, said: “Race For Life was such a brilliant experience. Not only was I doing it for a worthy charity in memory of my loved ones, but it is such a great way to give yourself a goal to get fit.”
