Successful start for Wigan vaccination centre

Around 1,000 people were given the COVID-19 vaccination during the first two days of a new SSP Health-led centre.
St Peter’s Pavilion in Hindley has been transformed into a vaccination centre by Wigan Borough CCG in partnership with SSP.
Staff from SSP surgeries across Wigan, Hindley PCN, and volunteers from the CCG, Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles and Wigan Council were involved in the initiative, which ran from 8am to 8pm. The vaccination centre will now operate continually as more vaccine becomes available.
CCG Managing Director Prof Craig Harris visited to see the vaccination process at first hand.
Dr Shikha Pitalia, SSP Health Director and GP who is also Chair of Wigan GP Alliance (pictured with Prof Harris), oversaw the smooth running of the initiative.
She said: “It was an absolute honour and privilege to lead this vaccination programme for our patients and others.
“It has been really successful, and I am so proud of the team. Huge thanks to our staff, the CCG and Hindley PCN – including Clinical Director Dr Sanjay Wahie – for making this happen.
“The relief and gratitude shown by many of the elderly people who are now vaccinated makes all the hard work worthwhile. The work at this centre is one more step in the right direction in defeating this disease.”
